Is bobby fischer Ever going to play chess again?

Author: trainiac

Not likely.

He probably still follows chess, and plays computer games, but knows he isn't at the level to play any current champions. He was an absolute chess genius, beating other champions by unheard of margins. Most chess championships are draw after draw after boring draw, and finally "won" by the player who has one or two more wins over a series of 20 or more games.

Fischer was beating people 6-0. This has never been done since. Usually, the player with the black pieces (thus moves second) isn't expected to win, but to try for a draw. Fischer was winning many consecutive games even while playing the black pieces. Though a chess genius, Fischer has pretty much been a weirdo most of his adult life. He is extremely eccentric. He would lay down unreasonable demands about the matches he would play in. He even would forfeit games and abandon the match if his demands weren't met. By some accounts, he made over 200 demands concerning the match to defend his world title against challenger Anatoly Karpov in 1975 - everything from the lighting, the placement of reporters and cameras; he wanted exclusive use of the hotel's pool, and so on. Many experts believe that he did this on purpose, to give him a reason to withdraw from the match when his conditions weren't met, because he was afraid of losing to Karpov. Other reports said Fischer was so paranoid that he was caught using pliers in an attempt to remove the fillings in his teeth, because he thought the Russian government was trying to send radio signals that would be picked up by his fillings and disrupt his thinking.Fischer was stripped of his title in 1975 for refusing to play Karpov. He became a recluse. Scattered reports say that he would often hang out in parking lots where a chess match was going on, and when he saw a famous player, he would rush up to him and blurt out "I'm Bobby Fischer! Let's play a game!" Sometimes they would play right there in the car, and then Fischer would disappear again.Fischer reappeared publicly in 1992, challenging Boris Spassky to play for the "World Championship." (Fischer insisted that HE was still the World Champion; that he had never lost it; it was all a conspiracy/crime when he was stripped of the title. Enough people wanted to see the match that five million dollars was raised to make it happen - even if FIDE wouldn't recognize the winner as being champion. Fischer made his usual unreasonable demands about the conditions, and even forfeited the second game of the match when some demands weren't met. Spassky didn't want to win by forfeit; he wanted to beat Fischer, so he finally gave in and basically said to give Fischer whatever he wants so he will have to play. Fischer did come back and play - and beat Spassky handily. At the time, there were roughly 100 players rated higher than Spassky. Observers said that it was obvious Fischer had been working very hard in isolation, and did have a few new tricks up his sleeve, but wasn't good enough to play competitively at the highest levels anymore. The champion at the time, Garry Kasparov, himself with an elo rating of 2812, estimated that Fischer 's level of play was "Around 2600 or 2650." In an interview with Playboy magazine, Kasparov said that "Fischer was the best," but if he were to play Kasparov today "He would lose his legend."Since defeating Spassky, Fischer hasn't played any competitive games publicly. He has run his mouth a lot, saying that he's still the Champion, that "there isn't a female player alive that I couldn’t give knight odds to and win," that George Bush is a criminal, that there's a vast conspiracy against him by the Jews, etc. He's also presented the idea that the game of chess should be changed - that so many games are rote memorization for the first twenty or more moves before a variation occurs (thus mind-numbingly boring), and the way to fix this is to have some way of shuffling the pieces around before the start of the game. The game would follow normal chess rules, but at the start of the game the pieces wouldn't be in their traditional positions - maybe the bishops would start on the outer corners, or the King and Queen could switch position with the knights, etc. An interesting idea, but it's very unlikely FIDE would do anything so radical.Today, Fischer has taken up political asylum in Iceland. He is wanted in the US on several charges, including tax evasion.

So bottom line - Fischer was one of the best players ever; one of the weirdest players ever; won't likely ever play in public again; and if he ever does play a current top contender, he will probably be crushed.
