This question will have many answers depending on what the answerer believes in.
Some people believe that there is no such thing as a soul, these people would say that you can’t lose something you never had.
Those who do believe that you have a soul typically do not believe that you can lose it in a literal sense. Many believe that you can corrupt or condemn your soul, condemn it to hell for example. To lose your soul in a literal sense, assuming there is a soul, you would not only die, but you would cease to exist at all. Often religions refer to the soul as living on after death; it is the part of us the lives in the afterlife. If you lost your soul then you would obviously not be able to partake in any afterlives that may be awaiting you. Aristotle claims that the soul is a part of us, but that when we die it dies, technically you’re not losing it, it just dies with you.
Figuratively it is possible to lose your soul. In this explanation it doesn’t matter if you believe in the soul or not you can still lose it. If the soul is the essence of who we are, if it is a symbol of who we are as individuals then it is most certainly something that we can lose. If you go against your own nature long enough to forget what you really want in life then I would say that you’ve lost your soul. You’ve lost the real you in a sense, so why not use the term soul.
We can also define the soul as the kindness and good inside of us. Many people do unkind and evil things throughout their lives; I’m not talking about the occasional mistake, but rather a person that has decided to take the immoral paths in life, a contract killer for example. These people could be said to have lost their souls and depending on your beliefs you may or may not be able to regain your soul in such circumstances.
